Prince 2 and in-house project management methodologies

This workshop will help business managers and students to gain an in depth understanding of the Prince 2 process model and its practical applications. We are also going to study other so-called in-house project management methodologies and why "one size" does not fit all organisations.

Prince 2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) had become the facto project management standard for many organisations world-wide. Many companies will only employ project managers who are Prince 2 qualified, at Foundation and/or Practitioner level. Prince 2 is process based (the what) and it is claimed that project managers are more likely to deliver their projects successfully if they adopt the Prince 2 principles. In contrast, many organisations have adopted their own in-house project management methodology (the how) to have a much better corporate fit that suits their particular business needs more effectively.

This course will introduce the Prince 2 process model in depth, covering the various stages of managing projects such as Directing the Project, Starting up a Project, Initiating a Project, controlling a Stage, Managing Product Delivery and Closing a Project. We are also going to have an in depth look at project management methodologies developed by companies for their own in-house use and how it is possible to combine the best from each to come up with some industry best practice project management methodology.

This course will help students and business managers to gain an in depth understanding why it is important to work with Prince 2 and other home-made methodologies to manage projects in commercial and business environments, and what the benefits are for doing so.

The course will involve lectures, whole audience and some interactive small group work to bring out some of the key messages. Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the key underlying concepts and principles of Prince 2 and other in-house methodologies
  • Understand why one methodology or process may not be sufficient on its own.
  • Use some real project examples to practice the new knowledge in a safe environment.
  • Take away new knowledge of ready-made and home-made project management processes and methodology.
